The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education discussed the superintendent search, while the Newtown-Harris School Board extended the contract of its superintendent during meetings held Tuesday night.

Pleasant View R-6

The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education hired an aide and a special education instructor and discussed the protocol to use when hiring a new superintendent during its meeting.

According to information provided by Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board hired Beth White as a temporary, part-time aide during the leave of absence of Lesley Asher and offered a contract to Kara Partridge to serve as an itinerant teacher for the Early Childhood Special Education program.

Board members agreed to use Jan. 17 and Feb. 21 as makeup days missed due to inclement weather. Additional makeup days will be decided at a later date. The board also discussed the possibility of purchasing a new freezer for the kitchen, with no action taken at this time.

The protocol to be followed during the superintendent search was discussed. The board agreed to advertise for the position and accept applications until Feb. 8. The board will review applications at the Feb. 8 meeting and set up interviews for the week of Feb. 14-18, with the hopes of having a candidate chosen by the end of February. Deaver is leaving the district at the end of his current contract to assume the superintendent?s post at Grundy R-5 School.

In his report, Deaver informed the board that a meeting between school administrators and Rep. Jim Whorton will be held Jan. 14 at South Harrison High School in Bethany. He also noted that the Trenton High School Color Guard will be at the school Jan. 19 to perform for classes and visit with eighth grade students who are interested in being in color guard next year.

Deaver said two persons, Joe Brinser and Tim Allen, have filed for re-election to the R-6 board, subject to the April 5 election. In addition to those three-year terms, the three-year term held by John Anderson and a one-year unexpired term that had been held by Dave McGinness will also be filled in the election. The filing deadline is Jan. 18.

The next regular meeting of the board will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at the school.

Newtown-Harris

The Newtown-Harris Board of Education met Tuesday night, discussing snow make-up days, the retention policy and the superintendent?s contract.

According to information provided by Superintendent Andy Anderson, the board discussed the five days missed due to inclement weather and has scheduled makeup days for Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 23, April 22 and May 18. It was announced that classes will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 for a teacher in-service.

The board voted to change the promotion and retention policy for grades kindergarten through two. The district will now use the DIBELS test instead of the Stanford 9 test. The change was necessitated due to new federal guidelines for testing.

It was announced that two persons, Chris Gibson and Jack Wells, have filed for seats on the board of education, subject to the April 5 election. The filing deadline is Jan. 18.

In other business, it was announced that Mercedes Foster was selected as elementary student of month and a financial aid workshop will be held at the school at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20.

Anderson also said the board has extended his contract, which now runs through the 2007-2008 school year.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 9.
