The Grundy County Law Enforcement Committee met Tuesday night and agreed to continue efforts to obtain property near the courthouse for location of a new county/city law enforcement center.

Co-Chairman Allan Berry said the committee confirmed that the former Nisbeth-Seidel property, located at the southeast corner of Main and Seventh streets, was the best site for the law enforcement center and that members of the county commission will be visiting with the current owner, Jim McCarty, about the availability of the property.

Berry said the committee also approved a proposed agreement between the county and city concerning each entity’s obligation to the new law enforcement center. The proposal still needs the approval of the county commission and the Trenton City Council.

Berry said dates were set for an open house, giving voters a chance to view the current county jail facility. Those dates were set for Friday, Jan. 21 and Friday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Members of the committee also plan to “walk the county,” visiting with area voters to present information about the law enforcement center, which will be on the ballot on Feb. 8. The “walk” will take place on Saturday, Jan. 22, Saturday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Feb. 5.

Grundy County voters will be asked to go to the polls and approve a one-half cent sales tax, which will be used for construction of the law enforcement center. Once construction is completed, the tax would be rolled back to three-eights of a percent for operation of the facility, which would house both the county and city law enforcement agencies as well as the 911 emergency services.

The committee will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 28 in the courtroom, located on the third floor of the Grundy County Courthouse. Berry said the committee plans to meet each Tuesday evening between now and the time of the election. Meetings are open to the public.
