The North Central Missouri College Lady Pirates hosted the first NCMC Women’s Christmas Classic over the weekend at the Ketcham Community Center.
The classic included NCMC, Southwestern Iowa Community College, Cottey College and the Central Methodist College junior varsity.
Southwest went 2-0 while NCMC went 1-1, CMC finished 1-1 and Cottey finished with a 0-2 record.
Friday Contests
Southwestern 81, NCMC 60
It was the tale of two halves for the NCMC Lady Pirates.
NCMC trailed Southwestern at the end of the first half, 35-33. Leigh Mead led the way with 16 points in the first half while Laumann led Southwestern with 11 points.
Southwestern?s Owens took over the game in the second half, scoring 20 points and helping stretch the lead to 21 points.
Four players for Southwestern finished in double figures. Owens had 28 points, Laumann scored 17 points, Gross finished with 14 points and Moore added 10 points.
NCMC’s Mead finished with a game-high 29 points. Shelley Rennison chipped in with 11 points.
CMC 67, Cottey 50
Central Methodist led at halftime, 42-19. Lemons of CMC scored 13 points, including seven in the first half and six in the second half.
Cottey outscored CMC in the second half, 31-25, but still came up short. Humphries led Cottey with 13 points.
Saturday Contests
NCMC 75, Cottey 55
Mead turned in her second 20-point performance of the tournament on Saturday afternoon against Cottey College. Mead, who brought home MVP honors from the tournament, scored 23 points to lead all scorers.
NCMC outscored Cottey in the first half, 39-27, then outscored Cottey in the second half, 36-28.
Three Lady Pirates finished with nine points, including Cassi Verhelle, Dana Lucas and Rennison.
Puskar led Cottey with 13 points. Taylor had 11 points and Futell added 10 points.
The Lady Pirates head into the Christmas break with an 8-7 record and will travel to State Fair on Jan. 11.
Southwestern 93, CMC 72
Southwestern went 2-0 in the classic, thanks in large part to a pair of 20-point games by Laumann and Owens. Southwestern outscored CMC in the first half, 53-32. Owens finished the game with 22 points, including 18 in the first half.
CMC outscored Southwestern in the second half, 48-41. Laumann led the way for Southwestern with 12 of her 21 total points. Gross had 16 points and Moore finished with 15 points.
CMC was led by Roberts with 14 points. Smith had 12 points and Ichord chipped in 10 points.
