The Pleasant View R-6 and Tri-County R-7 boards of education met in regular session Thursday night, hiring a basketball coach, setting the deadline for superintendent applications and setting the filing dates for the April election.

Pleasant View R-6

The Pleasant View R-6 Board of Education hired a basketball coach, accepted the resignation of a board member and heard a report on the board?s Annual Performance Report.

According to Superintendent Rob Deaver, the board hired Brad Rains as the fifth and sixth grade basketball coach for both boys and girls and accepted the resignation of board member Dave McGinness. Deaver said McGinness? position on the board, which was to expire in April 2006, will remain vacant until the April election and Tim Allen, a current board member, will serve as secretary. The filing dates for the April board election were set as Dec. 14 through Jan. 18 at the school. In addition to McGinness? unexpired term, the terms of Allen, John Anderson and Joe Brinser will expire.

The board considered applications for enrollment and approved two applications, one for a fourth grader and one for a sixth grader. An application for another student was denied due to that program being full.

In other business, the board approved the extension of the leave of absence for part-time aide Lesley Asher through the Christmas break. The original date for the leave to expire was Oct. 31. Jacob Probst will be filling the part-time aide position through the Christmas break. The board heard an update on equipment, including the installation of a new water heater in the preschool and it was noted that the freezer will be repaired by Bill Wilson.

Deaver gave a report on the Annual Performance Report for the school, which showed the district scoring a perfect 54 out of 54 points on the evaluation, which uses MAP scores, reading proficiency in grades three and seven, attendance and grade point average to determine whether or not the criteria has been met. In addition, the board learned that the district will serve as field test site for the new MAP tests in the areas of third grade communication arts and fifth and sixth grade math. Districts participating as field sites will determine average scores across the state.

The board also approved the compensation of fuel costs for snow removal for Tim Allen, who voluntarily removes snow from the parking lots during the winter months.

In his report, Deaver said there is an early out today for professional development, with second quarter progress reports to be distributed on Nov. 16. The district will host a junior high school basketball tournament on Nov. 18-20. In addition to R-6, teams planning to participate are Chula, Laredo and Spickard. Deaver said school will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23 for the Thanksgiving holiday, with no classes scheduled Nov. 24-26. Picture retakes are scheduled for Dec. 2, he said.

An executive session was held to discuss student matters, with no announcement made.

Tri-County R-7

The Tri-County R-7 Board of Education heard several program reports, set the filing dates for the April election and addressed facilities needs during its meeting.

According to information provided by Superintendent Ron Garber, the board voted to pay for cheerleading shirts and skirts, with girls softball uniforms to be addressed at the December board meeting. Paula Fagan gave the differentiated instruction program evaluation, with Debbie LaFerney presenting the special service report and Elementary Principal Toni Cox presenting the curriculum program evaluation.

Garber was appointed to serve as the Local Education Agency, LEA and Representative for Migratory, LEP and Homeless Programs.

The filing dates for the April 2005 election were set as Dec. 14 through Jan. 18. Declaration of candidacy forms may be picked up in the superintendent?s office from 8 to 5 p.m. between those dates. The three-year terms of Richard Dustman, Rodney Odom and Rena Perkins will expire.

Facilities chairman Rodney Odom gave the facilities committee report, with the two main areas of concern being the elementary roof, which is going to be temporarily patched by the school maintenance staff, and a new bus. Board members accepted surplus property bids for two tables, a cabinet, antenna and dividers. Board members agreed to purchase the serve of a special education teacher from Chillicothe Youth Service on an as-needed basis.

Since the board has accepted applications for several weeks for the superintendent?s opening for the 2005-2006 school year. The closing date for accepting applications was set as Nov. 20, with interviews starting Dec. 6.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Dec. 8.
