Leon Dale Porter, an 82-year-old resident of Lineville, IA, died on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004 at the Mercer Baptist Church. Rev. Ron Helton will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Lineville, under the direction of the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Service of Lineville.

Mr. Porter was born east of Mercer on March 28 1922, the son of Carl and Veta Gibson Porter. He attended the Ila and Brush College country schools and graduated from Mercer High School. He began his farming career in 1939, then left the farm two years later to enlist in the Army. He attended electrical school at Camp Callen, CA, then went to the European front with the 102nd Infantry Division as a forward observer during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded two Battle Stars and the Bronze Star.

He resumed his farming career following the war. He was married on Oct. 19, 1947 to Ruth Martin and they spent their entire married life farming, starting on a small farm east of Lineville. He enjoyed raising registered Angus cattle and held his own Angus auctions for several years.

Mr. Porter was a member of the American Angus Association, the Iowa Beef Improvement Association and the Wayne County Cattleman Association. He received the Ford Farm Efficiency award for outstanding achievement in agriculture in 1975 and received the Beef Improvement award for excellence as a seed stock producer in 1976. He also served on the Grundy Electric Cooperative Board of Directors for 22 years, including 14 years as president.

Mr. Porter was a Sunday School superintendent and teacher and enjoyed teaching young people. He helped form the Brush Arbor meeting, which has become an annual event celebrated every July since 1984.

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth; four children, James and his wife, Margie of Summerville, SC, Gregory and his wife, Cheryl, of Elgin, IL, Gary and his wife, Lori, of Mercer, and Karla and her husband, Danny, of Leon, IA; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Leola Perryman; and a brother and sister-in-law, Doral and Reba Porter.
