Veva Jackson Lickey, a 97-year-old Marshall resident died on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Marshall. She was a Grundy County native.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Marshall. Rev. Dave Huck will officiate. Burial will be in the Ridge Park Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Lickey was born March 25, 1907, the second of four daughters born to William Walter and Lettie Smith Jackson. She attended one-room schools during grades one through eight before attended high school in Galt, where she graduated as salutatorian in 1925.
Following her graduation, she worked as a child caretaker at the Baby Fold, an orphanage in Normal, IL. She then attended three terms of study at Culver-Stockton College, where she earned a teaching certificate.
She was married on Aug. 6, 1931 to Harold L. Lickey, who preceded her in death. After their marriage, the couple moved to Marshall, where her husband served as high school science and mathematics teacher. The couple attended the First United Methodist Church, where they were involved in many activities from teaching Sunday school to organizing church suppers. Mrs. Lickey was a founding member of the GM Chapter of PEO and a founding member of the Monday Club. She also was an organizer and volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was active in the Fitzgibbon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she held, at one time, the record for the number of volunteer hours served. She was also the founder of the school lunch program at Marshall High School and served as its administrator from 1955 to 1959. She was honored as the Woman of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1956 and again by Missouri Valley College in 1992.
Mrs. Lickey is survived by a son, Marvin Gordon-Lickey and his wife, Barbara, of Eugene, OR; five grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Sarah Diwan, David Lickey, Ingrid Wickelgren, Abraham Wickelgren and Rachel Clark; eight great-grandchildren; a niece, Nancy Finke; and a great-niece.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Etha Jackson, Buena Jackson Stolberg and Corinne Jackson.
