The Administrative Committee of the Trenton City Council met Wednesday afternoon, reviewing the new personnel policy manual and discussing concerns about loud stereos in cars.
City Administrator Kerry Sampson said the committee continued work on the policy manual, which is being updated for approval by the city council at a future date. Committee members asked that an ordinance be drawn up and sent to the council, requiring all city buildings and vehicles be smoke-free, except in designated areas. Sampson said the ordinance is expected to be presented to the council for consideration at its meeting on Monday night. He noted that many of the city buildings are already smoke-free and that the ordinance would encompass not only buildings, but vehicles as well.
The committee discussed concerns recently brought to the city council involving loud stereos in vehicles. Sampson said the committee has asked Police Chief Bob Lewis to gather more information concerning calls the police department has received in the last six months concerning the noise issue. It was noted that there is a city ordinance already on the books to address the situation as a disturbance, however, there are several factors involved to actually charge individuals, including being able to identify the offender and determining how loud the stereo was at the time the offense occurred. Lewis is to present the information to the committee at its next meeting for further discussion.
Sampson said the committee reviewed two proposals the city has received for a project coordinator, who would coordinate work being done to city property damaged during the May hail storm. Sampson said a determination is to be made as to whether or not to use a coordinator or a general contractor for the work, so action was tabled until more information is received.
An executive session was held to discuss the building inspector’s position. Sampson said an individual to fill the position is to be recommended to the full city council on Monday night. It is hoped an announcement can be made on Tuesday morning.
