The 2004 Missouri Day Festival official kicked off Thursday night with a soup supper and opening ceremonies at the Trenton First Baptist Church.

The Trenton Area Business Women sponsored a vegetable soup and chili supper in the church basement, with a large crowd in attendance. Proceeds from that event will go to fund a scholarship the organization presents to a student attending North Central Missouri College.

Steve Maxey served as host for the opening ceremonies, which featured announcement of the winners of the coloring and essay contests as well as entertainment presented by the Trenton High School Vocal Music Department. The THS show choir, ?Gold Rush,? sang the National Anthem while members of Boy Scout troops 97 and 99 presented the colors. The THS Concert Choir and THS Men?s Choir also sang during the evening, with solo performances by Savannah Hanson and Jeff Stevens. The choirs were under the direction of Sherry Whitt.

Special recognition was given to Buddy and Karla Hannaford, who are serving as this year?s parade grand marshals. The Hannafords were responsible for the implementation of the Missouri Day Marching Band Festival, now in its eighth year. The event has grown from 18 bands to 40 this year.
