The National Labor Relations Board has notified members of United Auto Workers Local 710, which represents union employees at Modine Manufacturing in Trenton, that a petition has been submitted to decertify the union at the local plant.

The petition was filed with the NLRB on Oct. 5. According to Lori Stafford, corporate communications manager with Modine, submission of a petition requires that at least 30 percent of eligible voters in the local union sign the request. The local union has 80 hourly members.

Ms. Stafford said that the company is waiting to hear from the NLRB as to the process that will be followed in bringing the decertification issue to a vote. She said Modine and the union would be working together to come up with a mutually agreeable date on which the election could take place. She stated that since the petition has been filed, the process could occur within 25 to 35 days. A simple majority would be needed to approve the decertification effort.

Union employees at Modine are under a three and one-half year contract, which was approved in October 2001 after workers were on strike for several months. The contract is set to expire in May 2005.
