The Grundy County Health Department has revised its influenza vaccination schedule and guidelines to comply with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control in light of the nationwide influenza vaccine shortage.
According to health department staff, flu shots will only be given to Grundy County residents who are considered high risk according to the CDC revised guidelines, which include children age six to 23 months and persons over age 65 or those with one of the following chronic health conditions: heart disease, lung disease, asthma, kidney disease, diabetes, a blood disorder or an immune system problem caused by disease (such as HIV or lymphoma) or by medication (such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy) or women who will be pregnant during the flu season, which runs from November through April. People who are not considered high risk are asked to forego their influenza vaccination this year so that individuals with these increased risks for complications can receive their shot.
The new schedule for vaccination will be as follows: Tuesday, Oct. 19-Wise Community Center in Spickard, 10 to 11 a.m.; Laredo Fire Station, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; and Galt Senior Housing, 3 to 4 p.m. Only those meeting the criteria as high-risk will be vaccinated at these clinics and because a limited number of staff members will be sent to these outreach clinics, the health department can only accommodate persons from these communities on this day.
On Wednesday, Oct. 20 a clinic will be held from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. at the Grundy County Senior Center, with only those meeting the criteria for high-risk to be vaccinated. If vaccine permits, another clinic will be held there from 1 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26.
Eligible clients should bring their Medicare or Medicaid card for billing purposed. A donation is requested for those not covered by either of those programs. For more information, persons may contact the health department at 359-4196.
