The Grundy R-5 Board of Education reinstated two portions of the Missouri Assessment Program and heard reports on attendance and upcoming events during a meeting held Monday evening in Galt.

According to R-5 Superinten-dent Harry Wheeler, the board approved a recommendation by High School Principal Kirk Cohagan that the district reinstate the science and social studies portions of the MAP test for students in grades kindergarten through 12. Reinstating the tests, which are optional and had been eliminated by many school districts due to budget cuts, will result in an additional $691.28 in costs to the district.

Elementary Principal Lisa Fairley said enrollment at the elementary school is 111, with an average daily attendance for August of 106, which is 95.4 percent. Librarian Patsy Bailey said she is planning to hold an open library/family fun night one night per month, beginning with this Thursday evening with an event for students in kindergarten through third grade and their families at the elementary school.

It was also reported that 80 students in the district received incentives and certificates for perfect attendance in August.

Agriculture instructor and FFA Advisor Phil Fox reported that he will be taking students to the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY Oct. 26-30 and noted that Grundy R-5 will host Stacia Berry, a national FFA officer on Sept. 23. She will be speaking to various ag classes during the morning hours.

In other business, the board heard a report from Wheeler on the Missouri School Boards Association Annual Conference, which will be held Oct. 22-24 and the topics that will be covered and the approved policy updates. It was agreed to follow a recommendation from the district?s liability insurance carrier to have all staff members view a 35-minute presentation on how to spot child abuse. By participating in the program, Wheeler said, the district can keep its insurance premiums lower and will also have staff members that are better trained to see the warning signs of a child who is being abused.

A work day was discussed to move playground equipment from the old preschool building in Galt to the elementary school in Humphreys. The board plans to hold the work day in October, but no specific date was scheduled.

An executive session was held to discuss student discipline and records not open to the public. No announcement was made following the closed session.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18.
