Wright Memorial Hospital and Physicians Group has announced the addition of north central Missouri?s first certified nurse-midwife.

Bridget Robinson of Trenton will begin practicing at the Physicians Clinic in early September. Mrs. Robinson is certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives. She received her midwifery training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS and completed her residency at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital in Lincoln, NE. Prior to completing her midwifery degree, Mrs. Robinson worked for seven years as a registered nurse in obstetrics, receiving her bachelor?s of science degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Mrs. Robinson has lived in Grundy County for the past six years and is the first certified nurse midwife to practice in north central Missouri.

Among the women’s services Mrs. Robinson will offer at the physicians clinic are preconception visits, prenatal care for normal pregnancies, in-hospital labor support and delivery at Wright Memorial Hospital, post-partum care, newborn care, family planning and education, breastfeeding education and support, well-woman exams (pap smears and breast exams) and peri-menopausal and Post-menopausal Care

According to information provided by Wright Memorial Hospital, certified nurse-midwives have been providing care to women for nearly a century. The number of women choosing nurse-midwives for their prenatal and postpartum care has doubled in the last decade, now totaling over 10 percent of vaginal births nationwide. In 2001, 97 percent of CNM deliveries occurred in hospitals while only 0.9 percent occurred in the home. Nurse-midwives specialize in personalized care focusing on maintaining health and encouraging women to make informed choices about their health. Women who are cared for by a nurse-midwife can expect the same level of safety as they can from a physician. Nurse-midwives are licensed in all 50 states and provide safe, patient centered care for low-risk maternity patients, and gynecological care such as annual exams and reproductive health visits for women of all ages.
