Gene Saunders, a 66-year-old resident of Chillicothe, died on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Morningside Center in Chillicothe.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2004 at the Cornerstone Church in Chillicothe, under the direction of the Heritage Funeral Home at Chillicothe.
General visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the funeral home, where a family visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Mr. Saunders was born on Oct. 5, 1937 at Whitesville, the son of Russell and Lucille Smith Sanders. He graduated from Rosendale High School in Rosendale. He received a bachelor of science degree from Tarkio College in Tarkio and a master’s degree from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. He played football in both high school and college.
He was married on June 12, 1960 in Chillicothe to Linda Kiely, who survives of the home.
Mr. Saunders was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. He was a counselor at Chilicothe High School as well as an assistant football coach and golf coach. He was an associate pastor of the World of Life Church in St. Joseph. He and his family founded the Cornerstone Church at Chillicothe and he also farmed in the Chillicothe area.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Lucille Smith Saunders of Savannah; two sons, Pastor Stan Saunders and his wife, Michelle of Chillicothe and Jim Saunders and his wife, Sharon, of Kansas City; one daughter, Lorie Stephens of Kansas City; nine grandchildren, Whitney, Morgan, Laine and Lindy Saunders of Chillicothe, and Brooks, Brett and Blake Stephens and Jacob and Carly Saunders of Kansas City; and one nephew, Johnnie Huback of Whitesville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Saunders; and one sister, Charlotte Huback.
