Roofers Have Only One Place To Take Materials
There?s hardly a roof in Trenton that wasn?t damaged during the recent severe storms and with many of those roofs needing replacement, local officials want to be sure that debris from those jobs is disposed of legally.
Mary Hopke an environmental specialist with the northeast regional office of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in Macon, said there is only one legal option when it comes to disposing of roofing materials.
?If the contractors do what they?re supposed to do, there?s only one option: taking it to a landfill or transfer station,? said Ms. Hopke.
Ms. Hopke said dumping of the debris on private property or on country roadsides and other locations is not legal and she understands the concern expressed by city and county officials considering past dumping problems in the area compounded with the large number of contractors now working in the area. Contractors can contact the landfill companies, who will supply a roll-up dumpster to be used at the site or contractors can use a truck to haul the debris to a landfill or transfer station.
Ms. Hopke said it is important for the homeowner to know where the debris is going.
?It?s to the homeowner?s advantage to know where they?re taking the debris from your home,? she said. ?Just ask them, ?Where are you taking this?? Make a point of asking. It?s in your best interest.?
Ms. Hopke said transfer stations are located at Bethany and Chillicothe and the Onyx Landfill is located in Macon.
Ms. Hopke said anyone who is aware of illegal dumping or who sees someone dumping should take note of the subject?s license plate number and contact the DNR Office in Macon at 660-385-2129 or the Grundy County Sheriff?s Department at 359-2828.
