Over $41,000 was raised Friday night and Saturday during the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life activities held at C.F. Russell Stadium.

Over $41,000 was raised Friday night and Saturday during the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life activities held at C.F. Russell Stadium.

A total of 22 teams and 279 walkers came together to raise the funds, which will be used in various ACS research, education, advocacy and service program.

Wright Memorial Hospital was the top fund-raising team with $3,944.63 while the top individual was Billy O?Banion from the Money Unlimited/Owens family team, who raised over $1,000.

?We appreciate all the support we received from each of the teams as well as from our sponsor,? said Terry Toms, event chairman. ?We are specially grateful to the many volunteers and their families for all the hard work to make this event happen.?

The team walking the most laps was Just Hope, 674, while Carlos Hendricks of the Money Unlimited/Owens family team walked the most individual laps, 112. The Galt community sold the most luminarias, 77, while Cindy Gott and Shelly Searcy of the same team tied as the individual selling the most luminarias, 25 each.

Other award winners included Precious Fairytales, best decorated campsite; Nazarene Church, team spirit; and North Central Missouri Mental Health, first, Wright Memorial Hospital, second, and Nazarene Church, third, lip sync contest.

Two individual awards were also presented. David Burkeybile received the Volunteer of the Year Award for his work in getting things ready for the relay as well as helping throughout the event. The Dr. Gordon Klatt Award went to Ms. Toms in recognition of her efforts which showed ?one person can make a difference in the community.? Dr. Klatt was the individual credited with starting the Relay for Life event in 1985.

The relay got under way when 82 cancer survivors walked the first lap of the event. A luminaria ceremony, illuminated the entire track area, included over 800 candles purchased in memory of those who have lost the battle to cancer and in support of those still fighting the disease.

During the opening ceremonies, corporate sponsors received recognition for their contributions. They included Wright Memorial Hospital, ConAgra Food, Barnes Baker Motors, Modine, Hy-Vee, Lakeview, His Way, Citizens Bank and Trust, Global Instruments, Sunnyview Nursing Home, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri, US Bank, Piggly Wiggly, North Central Missouri College, Dockery Chapel Church, Sontech Home Respiratory Equipment, Farmers State Bank, Money Unlimited, Hobbs Recycling and Crane Service, Auto Dynamics, Gifts by Garcia, the Galt Christian Church, the Republican-Times and PAR Broadcasting.

Members of the Relay for Life Committee were Lanah Stottlemyre, Gay Urton, Peggy Pipes, Roberta Sayer, Bonita Price, Kathy LSpears, Sandy Smith, Carolyn Smith, Jennifer Graves, David Burkebyile, Sonya McCulley, Jerri Southers, Molly Long and Jennifer Westcott.
