Plans are under way for the first-ever Gooseberry Festival in Trenton.
The event is scheduled for June 18-20 and includes a variety of activities, kicking off on June 18 with baby, prince and princess and queen competitions at the Trenton AMS auditorium. The contest will be from 7 to 10 p.m. and has categories for infants to age three (baby contest), youth ages three to six (junior prince and princess), youth ages 7 to 12 (princess) and 13-and-over (queen).
All categories except that of queen will be judged on appearance and personality, with the queen competition to include interviews on Wednesday evening prior to the Friday contest.
Prizes will be awarded. There is a $5 entry fee for the queen contest and $3 for all other categories. For more information, persons can contact Sandy at 359-3351 or Connie at 359-5555.
Saturday’s events begin with a a 5K/10K run/walk. Registration is at the North Central Missouri Fairgrounds livestock pavilion, beginning at 7 a.m. There is a $10 entry fee, which includes a t-shirt. The run/walk will get under way at 7:30 a.m. For more information, persons can contact Lance Croy at 359-2658.
Cooks are invited to participated in a cooking contest, using gooseberries as the main ingredient. Pies, jams and jellies can be entered at 9 a.m. at the Rock Barn, with judging to take place at 9:30 a.m. There is no entry fee and prizes will be awarded. Persons wanting more information can contact Dr. Nick McHargue at 359-3800.
A trail ride, coordinated by Mike Bruner and Ray Ulmer, will get under way at 9 a.m. at the Poosey area.
Children’s games and storytelling are planned at 10 a.m. in the Rock Barn area. Children ages 12 and under are invited to participate, with prizes and ribbons to be awarded.
Youth softball and baseball tournaments also get under way at 10 a.m., with girls teams (ages 14 and under) playing at Moberly Park while boys teams (age 12 and under) will play at the Johnson/Griffin field complex. There will be a golf driving and chipping contest at the golf driving range just east of Trenton. This also begins at 10 a.m. Additional information is available from Troy Smith at 359-3763 or Chuck Lankheit at 359-9045.
A horseshoe pitching contest will be held at Eastside Park. A clinic is planned at 1 p.m., with the tournament to follow. Casey Kitchen is cooridinating the event and is being assisted by his grandfather, Johnny Egeland. Persons can contact Kitchen at 485-6690 or Egeland at 359-5359 for more information.
Motorcycle and ATV races are planned at the fairgrounds grandstand area, beginning at 4 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee. Sign-up is from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children age 5 and under. A pit pass is available for $10. Vendors will be in the Rock Barn area on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Crafts, food and novelty items will be offered. Persons wanting booth space are asked to call Rosetta Marsh at 359-2013. Applications for vending spaces are also available at city hall, the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Republican-Times and KTTN.
Sunday’s events get under way at 12:30 p.m. as baseball and softball tournaments conclude at Griffin and Johnson fields. Mike Ball is coordinating a bicycle ride at Crowder Park, with participants to meet at the parking lot by the swimming area at 2 p.m.
