The Grundy R-5 Board of Education accepted several resignations during Monday night’s meeting at the school in Galt.

Superintendent Paul Huey will be resigning his position, effective at the end of the 2004-2005 school year. That action was taken during an executive session of the board. In the open portion of the meeting, the board accepted resignations from Teresa Oaks, Title I teacher; Tammy Dustman, second grade teacher; Janice Osborn, librarian; Tinna Croy, fifth grade teacher; and Becky Walker, counselor.

Huey said the board offered three positions at the elementary school, subject to a complete check of references. Contracts were also offered to Dixon Munday, who had earlier been let go by the district because of finances, as an elementary instructor; and to Sarah Lewis as a librarian/teacher. Cathy Hutchison was also hired to provide supplemental speech services.

Salary increases of $3,000 were approved for Susan Brown, high school secretary, and Charla Pipes, elementary secretary. A raise for board secretary Shelly Searcy was discussed, but action was not taken as there was no second to the motion.

In an effort to reflect a paper trail on action taken at a previous meeting, the board had placed in the minutes a statement, “Tammy Meeker was bumped by a tenured teacher, then the position was eliminated due to finances.”

Huey said the board discussed the interview process and decided it would put together a committee of teachers and staff to assist with interviewing potential candidates. Huey said that Les Jackson, who is the head coach of all sports in the R-5 School District, told the board he would like to have some input if the board would decide to hire an assistant coach.

It was reported that the first session of summer school is under way with 121 students in attendance. The second session will be from June 1-17.

The board instructed administrators to look into a security system for the building and parking lot. An eight-block schedule was adopted by the board, which also swore in a new member, Allan Berry, who is replacing Kim Oaks.

Huey gave a financial report, showing the fund balance at $740,150.45 at the end of April. This is $136,929.44 less than the fund balance at the same time last year.

Reports were heard from elementary principal Lisa Fairley and high school principal Shawn Schultz, who will discuss changes in the handbook policy with the board at the June meeting. Huey reported that he had received two quotes on health insurance and that he would be getting additional information.

The board also heard information about direct deposit of payroll checks and teachers are to be polled to see if there is interest in doing this.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 28.
