Orpha Hughell “Bud” Coon, an 85-year-old resident of Princeton, died on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at his farm, north of Princeton.

Orpha Hughell “Bud” Coon, an 85-year-old resident of Princeton, died on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at his farm, north of Princeton.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton. Pastor Gary Ponder Williams officiated. Burial was in the Goshen Cemetery, west of Princeton.

Mr. Coon was born northwest of Princeton on July 20, 1918, the son of Perry McClain and Audie Ethlyn Clark Coon. He was a lifelong resident of Mercer County and attended the Rockhold rural school, northwest of Princeton. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Field Artillery in the European Theater and receiving four bronze stars. He was a member of the Ragan-Hickman American Legion Post No. 477 at Mercer, a lifetime member of the Memorial VFW Post No. 7159 of Princeton and a member of the Mercer Baptist Church.

He was married on March 29, 1947 to Anna Lee Robb, who preceded him in death on May 18, 2001.

Mr. Coon was a farmer all of his life. He loved his cattle, gardening and dogs.

He is survived by three sons, Mark Coon and his wife, Kathy, of Princeton, Max Coon of Mercer and Mike Coon and his wife, Pat, of Des Moines, IA; nine grandchildren, Josh, Jonas, Jamie, Jessica, Amy, Jarret, Tara, Eric and Justin Coon; four great-grandchildren, Brayden Smith and Parker, Ryan and Logan Coon; one brother, Gene Coon and his wife, Twyla, of Princeton; one sister, Elaine Gannon of Johnston, IA; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Maxine Coon; three brothers, Dale, Lee and Loren Coon; and for sisters, Glenn Snyder, Mildred Ross, Elva Dinsmore and Velma Danielson.
