The Grundy R-5 Board of Education met in regular session Monday night, discussing suggestions made by staff, discussing the summer work schedule and setting the date for a special meeting.

According to information provided by Superintendent Paul Huey, the board was asked by Elementary CTA Representative Janice Osborn if the board had reviewed a suggestion packet received at the last meeting. The suggestions were read by Board President Kim Oaks and were discussed, although no details were listed in the minutes of the meeting.

Lisa Fairley gave the elementary principal?s report, noting that current enrollment is 104 at the elementary building. In addition, the summer school budget was approved.

Shawn Schultz gave the high school principal?s report, with the current enrollment at 97. The school health index, which is a survey and looks at the district?s health practices and policies, was approved, with five board members voting yes, Mrs. Oaks abstaining and Dennis McDonald voting no. Mrs. Oaks said the index contains areas the district will target in the coming year, including tobacco use, nutrition and physical activity.

In Huey?s report, it was noted that a second ?Save Our School? public forum will be held at the elementary building in Humphreys on March 29 at 7 p.m. The school calendar was discussed and board members also discussed summer work schedules for building improvements. Some of the items mentioned were putting an awning over the north entrance to the gym to prevent flooding inside the building, moving the special education room to the FACS room, re-roofing the old gym at the high school and installing security cameras at the elementary building.

Huey also gave a financial report, noting that the district ended February with a balance of $810,431.54, which is $123,985.10 less than February 2003.

An executive session was held, with no announcements made.

The next meeting will be a special meeting scheduled for April 7 at which time the April 6 election results will be certified and the board will reorganize.
