LaVerla Hess, a 75-year-old resident of Kansas City, died on Friday, March 12, 2004 at her home. She was a native of Trenton.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Memorial Chapel at 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd. in Kansas City. Burial will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
A visitation is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Hess was born on Oct. 19, 1928 in Trenton, the daughter of Harry and Hazel Custard. She graduated in 1946 from Trenton High School, where she met her husband, Norman, whom she married in 1949. They lived in St. Joseph until moving to Kansas City in 1966.
Mrs. Hess served two terms as president of the women’s auxiliary of VFW Post 8100. She retired after 15 years of service with the Hickman Mills School District Food Services Department. She was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church. She loved to travel and took several trips a year. She was an avid bowler and bowled on numerous leagues throughout her life. She was well-known for her craft and decorating ideas and projects.
Mrs. Hess is survived by her husband, Norman; six children and their spouses, Myron and Gail Hess, Rick and Kim Hess, Brian (Scott) and Johann Hess, Karen and Larry Swayne, Anita and Mike Bence and Stephanie Thomas; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Lou Elwood and Virginia McAtee; and other family and friends.
