Sgt. Stephen Glenn McFarland, a 48-year-old resident of Milan, died Thursday night, Feb. 12, 2004 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 at the Schoene-Ruschmeier Funeral Home in Milan. Danny Busick and Rev. Gary Ellsworth officiated. Chuck Ellsworth, Kay Newcomer and Desiree Newcomer provided the music.
Casketbearers were Ron Stewart, Randy Morris, Ronald Morris, Donnie Swartz, Dennis Moran and Troy Hoover.
Honorary bearers were Perry McFarland Jr., Matthew Newcomer, Chuck Ellsworth, Riley Newcomer, Fred Spillman and Roger Newcomer.
Burial was in the Schrock Cemetery, south of Reger. Military rites were conducted at graveside by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Ft. Leavenworth, KS.
Sgt. McFarland was born Oct. 2, 1955 in Kirksville, the son of Perry E. Sr. and Bonnie L. Keller McFarland. He was a graduate of Schuyler County High School and had lived in Milan since 1975. He was currently serving active duty with the 1221st Unit of the Army National Guard, based at Trenton. He was also employed as a mechanic with the National Guard Organizational Maintenance Shop No. 14 at Trenton. He previously worked for Con Agra in Milan. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 228 at Milan and attended the Bread of Life Church. He excelled in the sport of mud racing and earned many trophies over the years.
He was married on Nov. 21, 1975 at Milan to Connie L. Leach, who survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, other survivors are one daughter, Stephanie Clark of Milan; two grandsons, Coty and Kelby West; one brother, Perry E. McFarland Jr. of Kirksville; three sisters, Martha Ellsworth and her husband, Gary, of Raytown, Paula Dennis and her husband, Virgil, of Eldon and Kay Newcomer and her husband, Roger, of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family has suggested memorials to the American Cancer Society.
