Funeral services for Alfred Jackson ?Jack? Gardner were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004 at the Laredo Baptist Church in Laredo. Burial was in the Alpha Cemetery in Alpha. Arrangements were under the direction of Lindley Funeral Home at Laredo.
Mr. Gardner, an 82-year-old resident of Laredo, died on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Gardner was born on Nov. 9, 1921 in the Alpha community, the son of Bert Lee and Nellie Maude McCoy Gardner. He was a 1941 graduate of Laredo High School and had lived in Grundy County all his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving the Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a farmer and security guard for Modine Manufacturing for 13 years. He was a member of the Laredo Baptist Church, the Joseph L. Norton VFW Post No. 919 of Trenton and the American Legion of Chillicothe.
He was married on Feb. 1945 in Trenton to Betty Jean Bennett, who survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Jackie Sue Owens of Laredo, Connie Jean Miller of Kansas City and Jan E. Hoke of Independence; five grandchildren, Punky Owens and Cissy Loyd of Laredo, Nikki Cain and Cody Arr of Kansas City and Brittany Hoke of Independence; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Rex, George, Nova and Sam Gardner.
