The Building Board of the Trenton City Council met Thursday night, agreeing to begin the formal procedure of getting a property cleaned up and discussed a notice of violation received by the Department of Natural Resources.

City Administrator Kerry Sampson said the board decided to issue formal notification to Bill Zang concerning property he owns on Tinsman Avenue. Sampson said the city has been working with Zang for over a year to get the property either removed or repaired and it was the feeling of the board that the city needed to move forward according to the city’s building code. A letter is to be sent to Zang, telling him he has 10 days in which to begin demolition or repair of the building. How the board will then proceed will depend on what happens once the 10-day period is up.

Sampson said the board discussed a notice of violation received by the city concerning its housing demolition project. The notice states that the city did not meet the 10-day prior notice requirement for removal of asbestos, thus putting the project in violation of DNR rules. Sampson said that notification was given and that the city followed the procedure outlined by DNR, which then determined it wanted the process to be done a different way. Sampson said the city will be meeting with DNR officials to discuss the situation, noting that other communities have voiced similar concerns with DNR in regard to projects done there.
