An organizational meeting for the 2004 American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ketcham Community Center on the North Central Missouri College campus.
All persons interested in being a part of the event are invited to attend. This year’s Relay for Life is scheduled for June 4.
According to co-coordinator Terry Toms, Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society?s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of eight to 15 people camp out at a local high school football field and take turns walking, or running around a track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are 12 to 24 hours in length and go overnight.
The power of the relay allows a community to grieve for those lost to cancer and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived, Ms. Toms continued. For the newly diagnosed, the relay offers an opportunity to meet someone who has survived the same type of cancer. For the cancer patient in treatment, the relay provides an opportunity to share with others. For the long-term survivor, the relay brings a community?s recognition of the struggle and closure to a trying time in life.
Caregivers also find hope in Relay For Life, Ms. Toms said. These individuals give their time, love and support to friends, family and neighbors who face cancer. At the relay, everyone understands the challenges and joys of being a caregiver. She said there is a peace of mind knowing that together everyone can face the challenges ahead.
