Assessment Forms Being Mailed
Forms listing personal property which is subject to assessment for the 2004 year have been mailed by the Grundy County Assessor’s office.
According to Assessor Andrea Steinhoff, every owner or holder of personal property must report on the form provided by the assessor all taxable personal property which was owned or held by the person or business on Jan. 1, 2004. This report must be turned into the assessors office by March 1.
“Every year a few property owners forget to return their lists, so we make every effort to remind people to return them on time,” Mrs. Steinhoff said. “We would also like to encourage everyone to read the informational pamphlet that is included with their assessment list and to fill out the portion on the back regarding their homes.”
Those not returning a completed list to the assessor by March 1 are subject to a penalty, which Mrs. Steinhoff said can range from $10 to $100, depending upon the value of the property.
“And the statutes provide the assessor with almost no discretion to waive the penalties,” she said.
Until recently, few penalties were applied and lists were commonly filed late, according to the assessor. The statutes were changed in 1994 and compliance with the law has increased dramatically.
In an effort to give taxpayers all available allowances, the assessor’s office adjusts for high mileage and/or salvage title discounts.
“If you own a vehicle with excessive mileage or with a salvage title, please provide us with a copy of your most recent inspection or oil change slip dated prior to Jan. 1, 2004, along with a copy of your salvage title,” Mrs. Steinhoff said. “This will be the only opportunity to take advantage of the high mileage and salvage title discounts.”
Property owners or leaseholders who have not received a list are not excused from filing and should contact the assessor for a blank form. They may call the office at 359-2413 or stop by the office, which is located on the first floor of the Grundy County Courthouse.
