PTO Will Assist With Prop C Effort
The Rissler Elementary School PTO met Tuesday night, discussing ways to promote the upcoming Proposition C rollback waiver ballot issue and agreeing to donate funds to the effort.
Steve Holt, co-chairman of the committee organized to help secure passage of the issue, presented information about Proposition C and what it would mean for the district. In addition, Dr. John Holcomb and Cathy McKay, members of the Trenton R-9 Board of Education, were at the meeting and thanked the organization for its recent presentation to the board in which PTO asked that the board visit Rissler School, provide leadership for the Proposition C campaign and remain true to the priorities it set in the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. Dr. Holcomb said the board does plan to remain true to those priorities as much as funding will allow. PTO President E?Lisha Gass noted that if the Prop C waiver passes, PTO might be coming back to the board to ask t hem to take steps to reduce class size in the younger elementary grades as currently the largest classes in the district are the ones with the youngest children, which is inverse to what the state recommends.
Holt discussed several steps the Prop C committee is taking to help ensure passage of the issue, including a business promotion, ward calling, business calling, adopting a slogan (Educating Our Kids is Good Business: Vote Yes on Feb. 3), outreach at each of the schools and placing materials with local media. After a discussion of how PTO can help with the effort, PTO members voted to pay up to $500 of the bills incurred in the effort and will organize a ?room parent? system in which a parent or parents will be responsible for contacting the other parents in their child?s classroom to encourage them to vote yes. Carolyn Schmidt volunteered to coordinate the program. In addition, it was noted that persons wishing to donate to the effort may make donations to PTO and earmark them for ?Prop C?. These can be left at the Republican-Times or mailed to Tricia Lenhart at 514 Town and Country Ln., Trenton, MO 64683.
In other business, reports were given on the chili supper, with it noted that Robin Wilson and Mary Woodson will head up the event again next year, and a book fair, which will be held the week of February 23 in conjunction with a family activity night that was tentatively scheduled for Feb. 27. Reports were also given on the volunteer program and the yearbook.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3 in the Rissler Library.
