The Trenton Police Department is urging citizens and visitors to Trenton to lock their vehicles when unattended as law enforcement officials are seeing a significant rise in the report of thefts.

According to information provided by the police department, officers are investigating leads on these crimes reported, however, the perpetrator or perpetrators have not been apprehended. The department?s incident reports reflect that a majority of the crimes have involved unlocked vehicles. Very few of the reports are thefts from secured vehicles, which police indicate seems to be a good deterrent for the suspects.

Victims have reported a wide variety of items taken, from thermos containers and binoculars to purses and wallets. The thieves are not particular in what they steal, although police say purses and wallets seem to be the most common items taken. The reports of thefts have occurred in all areas of town, including residential, business and parking lots.

While locking a vehicle will not entirely protect citizens from being a victim of theft, police say it will greatly decrease the possibility. Also, police say it is not wise to leave valuables, purses, wallets or large sums of money in vehicles unattended. If this is necessary, police said to try and conceal the item to where it is not in plain view of a passerby.

Persons who notice an individual looking suspicious in parking lots or residential areas or who see someone rummaging through a vehicle are asked to call the police department at 359-2121 or dial 911.
