An instructor at North Central Missouri College, Dr. Vicki Wheeler has been named a recipient of the Governor?s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Currently serving as the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences as well as instructor of English and theatre, Dr. Wheeler earned a bachelor?s degree (summa cum laude) in 1969 from Central Missouri State University, a master of arts in English in 1973, also from CMSU, and a doctorate in English education from Illinois State University in 1983.

At the state level, Dr. Wheeler has served on the General Education Steering Committee responsible for facilitating transfers among Missouri colleges. At NCMC, she served as Dean of Instruction for two years, was responsible for overseeing and teaching in the education department, is credited for establishing and directing the development center and edited the self-study for the Higher Learning Commis-sion?s 2001 visit. Dr. Wheeler has twice served as president of the NCMC Faculty Senate and was among the first on the Trenton campus to teach on interactive television.

Dr. Wheeler has been active in the community where she has directed nearly sixty community and college plays including 15 musicals. She has been named a recipient of the Above and Beyond Award for Community Service, presented by the Trenton Chamber of Commerce.

The award is presented annually to honorees that are nominated by the respective institutions for their effective teaching and advising, service to the school community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement.

Dr. Wheeler will receive the honor on Thursday of this week when Gov. Bob Holden recognizes faculty from post-secondary schools, colleges and universities in Springfield.
