Lois Burkey, an 85-year-old resident of Independence, died on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at the St. Mary?s Hospital in Blue Springs.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton. Rev. Harry Clifton officiated. Burial was in the Princeton Cemetery.

Mrs. Burkey was born on March 16, 1918 in Mercer County, the daughter of Elson and Cora Miller McClaran. She was raised in Mercer County and was a graduate of Princeton High School.

Mrs. Burkey was married to Thomas Benton Burkey on Feb. 19, 1938. He preceded her in death on Aug. 27, 1991.

The couple moved to Kansas City in 1953, where she worked as a secretary for Peterson Cap and Gown Company for several years. In 1970, the couple moved to Branson, where she worked part-time for the county license bureau. For the past three years, she had made her home in Independence with her niece, Glenda Burkey, and a sister-in-law, Ruby Burkey.

In addition to her sister-in-law, Mrs. Burkey is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Tommy in 1957, and her brothers and sisters.
