Grundy County Clerk Kristi Urich has announced that county taxpayers will find an error on their real estate tax bills, but the error does not affect the accurateness of the assessed valuation and tax calculation.
According to Mrs. Urich, the number of acres printed on the tax bills are double the actual acreage owned by the taxpayer.
?In the proofing process, we checked for the accurateness of the assessed valuation and tax calculation, but missed the acres calculation,? she wrote in a news release. ?The issue has been discussed with our computer programmer. They found it to be a simple mathematical programming error that has now been corrected. Unfortunately, this discrepancy was discovered after the bills were already printed. The costs associated with reprinting the bills were great enough that I chose not to do so since we are already on a tight budget.?
Mrs. Urich emphasized that taxpayers? bills are correct except for the acres that are printed on the bill. Although the acres may have printed as double what is actually owned, the taxpayer is only being assessed and taxed on their actual acreage.
Township collectors are aware of the situation and are working with the clerk?s office to make the transition to the new tax collection system as smooth as possible. Taxpayers should be receiving their tax bills from the individual township collectors within approximately two weeks and will find a notice with the tax bill explaining the situation.
Mrs. Urich apologized for the confusion the error may cause and encouraged taxpayers to contact her office if they have any questions about their tax bill. She can be reached at 359-6305 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
