The Grundy County Nursing Home Board of Directors has announced the hiring of Patricia Shaw Akers as the new administrator at the Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments.

Mrs. Akers was hired during a special meeting of the board on Thursday. She had been serving as interim administrator at the facility since July 18 and begins her new duties immediately. She will continue to receive the same salary, $76,385. The vote to hire Mrs. Akers was unanimous among the six members of the board.

Mrs. Akers is a resident of Livingston County with her husband, Ernie, and has 10 years experience as a nursing home administrator, having worked at Hill Crest Manor in Hamilton and Long Blum Retirement Center RCF at Chillicothe. She has a son who attended schools at Humphreys and Galt and now resides on a farm at Dunlap, and a daughter, who is developmentally disabled and resides at an ISL in Kirksville. She said that staff has been very supportive during her interim stay at Sunnyview and that the residents and families have made her feel “so welcome.” She said she is thrilled to be given the opportunity to be the administrator at Sunnyview, noting that Sunnyview “is a beautiful home with good community and family involvement.”

Mrs. Akers said she has identified areas that she wants to improve, with one including training and education of staff. She said that staff are already being sent to training on a regular basis and that will be an ongoing process. She also plans to implement a wellness program for staff to raise awareness of health issues and promote a healthier lifestyle, which she said produces better care for the residents.

She said the staff is busy preparing for the upcoming holidays, starting with the annual Harvest Dinner in November. She said she is looking forward to being part of the event and being a part of Sunnyview. She said she welcomes anyone to stop by to meet her and visit the facility.
