Peter Newman Smith, an 85-year-old resident of Rogersville, died on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003 at the Greene Haven Nursing Home in Springfield. He is a former Laredo area resident.

Peter Newman Smith, an 85-year-old resident of Rogersville, died on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003 at the Greene Haven Nursing Home in Springfield. He is a former Laredo area resident.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Laredo.

Mr. Smith was born on Jan. 9, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY to Edward and Dora Roell Newman. He came to Missouri in 1929 on the Orphan Train and lived with foster parents, H.C. and Bessie Smith, and had his last named changed to Smith. He was married on Jan. 10, 1943 at Galt to Flora Mae Barnett. They lived in the Laredo community until moving to Chillicothe in 1948.

Mr. Smith was a bridge carpenter with Atkinson Windell until 1971, when the family moved to Rogersville, where he worked for Cox North Hospital in Springfield until his retirement in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Flora, of the home; one son, Otis Clay Smith and his wife, Betty, of Republic; three daughters, Bessie Coleen Wentworth and her husband, David, of Overland Park, KS, Susanne Carol Smith of Silver Springs, MD and Sheri Christine Hill and her husband, Donald, of Fordland; four sisters-in-law, Zelta Newman of Mesa, AZ, Pauline Tilton of Bates City, Margery Little of Centerton, AK and Maxine Cook of North Kansas City; five grandchildren, Todd and Jodi Smith of Republic, Tammy and Daron Watkins of Republic, Michael Wentworth of Overland Park, Leanne and Ben Sanley of Blue Springs and Matt Osborne of Lee’s Summit; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; foster parents; and one brother, Edward Newman.
