Missouri Day Festival Opens With Ceremonies

Trenton AMS, formerly the Adams Middle School, was the site for the opening ceremonies of the 2003 Missouri Day Festival. This year?s theme is ?Sample of the Past – School Days.?

A renovated auditorium saw a near-capacity crowd gather to learn the winners of the Little Miss and Mister Trenton contest and the winners of the coloring contest as well as meet the writers of essays about their favorite teachers, along with those teachers being present. In addition, members of the Trenton Middle School Showstoppers, the TMS choir and the Trenton High School Show Choir, Goldrush, performed as did Lisa Huffstutter.

Steve Maxey was the master of ceremonies. He introduced the grand marshal of Saturday?s parade, Ed Geyer, along with his wife, Jean.

Named Little Miss Trenton was Shelby Wendt, daughter of Jeremy and Ashley Wendt and Chrystal Johnson. The new Little Mister Trenton is Isaiah Phillips, son of Josh and Sheila Phillips. They will participate in the Missouri Day Festival Parade as well as help crown the new Miss Trenton and Miss Green Hills during the Jan. 3 pageants at the Ketcham Community Center. The contest was sponsored by the Miss Trenton/Miss Green Hills Pageant Committee.

Winners in the coloring contest, which was open to youngsters in preschool through second grade, were:

Preschool – Hallie May, daughter of Carl and Tiffany May, first; Mariah Fox, daughter of Phil and Kristi Fox, second; and Spencer Harris, son of Zach and Jewell Harris, third.

Kindergarten – Jessi Westcott, daughter of Danny and Jennifer Westcott, first; Jenny Frey, daughter of Jim and Julie Frey, second; and Ally Ockenfels, daughter of Kris and Tammy Ockenfels, third.

First grade – Kelsey Joiner, daughter of Rhonda Joiner and Brian McReynolds, first; Tanner Hudson, son of Steve and Lora Hudson, second; and Hunter Anderson, son of Eric and Amy Anderson, third.

Second grade – Mason Larson, son of Shane and Tiffany Larson, first; Megan Derry, daughter of Paul and Michelle Derry, second; and Tosha Wilson, daughter of Toni and Janet Wilson, third.

Winners of the essay contest were recognized, along with the teachers they honored. Two of the essay writers then read their winning essays. Kendra Foster wrote about Lois Spring and Jenny Murphy, who were her instructors at the Laredo R-7 School, while Mattie Lynch read about Norma Hickman, who not only was principal in the Spickard School District for many years, but was also her grandmother. Other essay winners and their honored teachers were Megan Hilsabeck, Jan Skeed of Pleasant View R-6 School; Krista Murphy, Lisa Allison of Rissler Elementary School; Brandi Thorne, Donalyn Crowley of Trenton Middle School; Kala Smith, Tinna Croy of Grundy R-5 Elementary at Humphreys; and Vanessa Barron, Tammy Spickard of Grundy R-5 High School at Galt. Winners in the adult category were Susan Plumb, who wrote about her mother, Ruth Burress; and Caryee Sayer Smith, who wrote about Becky Cochran and Sara Campbell.

Entertainment was provided by the TMS choir, the TMS Showstoppers and Goldrush. The choirs are under the direction of Sherry Whitt. Bev Whorton was the accompanist.

Mrs. Huffstutter sang the National Anthem as well as led the audience in ?America the Beautiful.? Accompaniment for Mrs. Huffstutter was provided by Marilyn Robbins, who also provided music prior to the program.

Missouri Day activities begin in earnest tonight with a program at the Grundy County Senior Center. Saturday?s events feature a parade, entertainment in the Rock Barn courtyard, a marching band festival and two programs by Goldrush. Sunday?s schedule includes a baby show, the Kiwanis Car Show, entertainment in the courtyard and a third program by Goldrush. Vendors, crafters and flea marketers will be open on both Saturday and Sunday as will the Grundy County Museum. A special program is planned at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Baker School, during which time Maradyn Oyler will officially present the two volumes of written history she has compiled on rural schools in Grundy County.
