The Rissler Elementary School PTO met Tuesday evening in the school library, hearing reports on the chili supper and book fair, hearing a presentation on the Proposition C rollback waiver issue and considering a request for the purchase of seats for the swings.

Treasurer Tricia Lenhart reported a balance of $4,367.37 in the treasury and noted that the Ellison rack has been purchased and installed.

The annual chili supper, scheduled for Nov. 14, was discussed, with signup sheets passed around for workers and ingredients. The signup sheet will also be available at parent teacher conferences on Oct. 23. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

The book fair will be held the week of Nov. 10 and will be open during the chili supper. Helpers will be needed to set up and tear down the book displays.

Principal Kathy Nolke gave an update on the volunteer program, which currently has 20 participants who are working with various teachers in the classroom. The background checks which are required for volunteers have been paid for through a donation. Volunteer applications are still being accepted.

Mrs. Nolke also discussed a plan to locate a fine arts gallery in one of the vacant classrooms, which would provide a way for the teachers of special classes to support and extend what the classroom teachers are doing. It is hoped to have the room ready for parent teacher conferences. She also discussed a program designed to encourage good behavior in the lunchroom by picking one classroom in the school with exceptional behavior to receive an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. In addition, one class from each grade level would have their good behavior rewarded with a treat from Kristi Davis? class.

R-9 Superintendent Craig Noah presented information on the Proposition C rollback waiver issue, which will be on the ballot on Nov. 4. The waiver would allow the district to increase the local levy by approximately 52 cents and would also result in additional state aid.

In other business, the group voted to hire Lisa Fuller to cater a meal for teachers during parent teacher conferences and discussed the Hy-Vee coupon books which are still for sale at a cost of $5. Of that amount, $4 goes to PTO. The coupon books expire Dec. 31. It was noted that the used book and magazine drive is still under way and the Church Women United has donated several used books. A request to replace the seats on the swings was discussed, with more information to be brought to the next meeting.

The next PTO meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the school library.
