As area schools head back to class today, reports show the enrollment count lower than the number of students coming to school on the first day a year ago.
A total of 1,161 students reported for the first day of classes in the Trenton R-9 School District today, which is 49 less than last year.
Rissler Elementary School reported 427 students enrolled in kindergarten through fourth grade, which is 16 less than a year ago. Trenton Middle School has 362 students in grades five through eight, down 12, while the high school enrollment is at 372 students, 21 less than last year.
The largest enrollment is the junior class with 106 students. The first grade class had 74 students while there are 75 seniors.
The R-9 enrollment, by grade, is kindergarten, 88; first grade, 74; second grade, 93; third grade, 88; fourth grade, 84; fifth grade, 86, sixth grade, 89; seventh grade, 89; eighth grade, 98; ninth grade, 99; 10th grade, 92; 11th grade, 106; and 12th grade, 75.
Newtown-Harris was the only area school reporting an increased enrollment from last year, up three students to 126. Student numbers were down at Pleasant View R-6, 80 (-2) and Spickard, 54 (-4) while Harrison County R-4 at Gilman City stayed the same at 126. Princeton enrollment numbers were not available as of press time.

Kindergarten, 4; first grade, 2; second grade, 7; third grade, 4; fourth grade, 5; fifth grade, 7; sixth grade, 6; seventh grade, 10; and eighth grade, 9.
Harrison R-4 at Gilman City
Kindergarten, 12; first grade, 11; second grade, 9; third grade, 7; fourth grade, 6; fifth grade, 11; sixth grade, 11; seventh grade, 12; eighth grade, 12; ninth grade, 9; 10th grade, 8; 11th grade, 8; and 12th grade, 9.
Newtown-Harris
Kindergarten, 9; first grade, 7; second grade, 8; third grade, 6; fourth grade, 8; fifth grade, 12; sixth grade, 4; seventh grade, 18; eighth grade, 10; ninth grade, 13; 10th grade, 9; 11th grade, 12; and 12th grade, 10.
Classes started on Tuesday in the Laredo R-7 and Grundy R-5 school districts. Jamesport begins classes on Monday, Aug. 25.
