Ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28 at Trenton to dedicate Highway 65 as the American Legion Memorial Highway.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at C.F. Russell Stadium and will be the first of two ceremonies, with a second to follow in Chillicothe at 11:30 a.m. on the town square.

Third District State Rep. Jim Whorton, D-Trenton, will serve as master of ceremonies for the event. Attending the ceremony will be State Sen. David Klindt, R-Bethany; State Rep. John Quinn, R-Chillicothe; Missouri Department of Transportation Director Henry Hungerbeeler; as well as county and city officials. The event is open to the public.

Major Dale Stepp American Legion Post No. 31 of Trenton originated the idea for the highway renaming and worked with District 2 Commander Bill Murry to see the project to completion. Assisting in the project were past commander Mike Lowrey, adjutant Hayden Staniford and past commander Arnie Arneson along with George Silvey and John Rensch of the Chillicothe post. Rep. Whorton sponsored the bill in the House of Representatives while Sen. Klindt and Sen. Jim Mathewson, D-Sedalia, promoted the bill in the Senate. Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell signed the bill into law.

Eight signs are to be posted along the highway, with funds provided by posts at Trenton, Mercer, Chillicothe and Sedalia. The signs will be located near the Iowa and Arkansas borders as well as two each near Trenton, Chillicothe and Sedalia. The Trenton post will be asking the American Legion headquarters in Iowa and Arkansas to have Highway 65 renamed in their states.
