Howard Leroy Almond, a 79-year-old Brookfield resident, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Wright-Baker-Hill Funeral Home in Brookfield, with Pastor Stan Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Park Lawn Memory Gardens in Brookfield. Visitation is in progress and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 o?clock this evening (Monday, Aug. 11, 2003) at the funeral home.

Mr. Almond was born April 25, 1924 in Marceline, the son of Jesse Melvin and Sarah Vesta Fanning Almond. He was married to Evelyn Corene Smith on Nov. 7, 1948. Mr. Almond had owned and operated an Apco service station in Brookfield and had worked at Hudson Oil and Groes Oil in Brookfield. He was also a sign painter and a custodian for Burris Community Center in Brookfield.

Mr. Almond was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Brookfield, where he was a deacon, and had served as president of the AARP in Brookfield.

He is survived by his wife, Corene, of Brookfield; two daughters, Linda Gillispie of Brookfield, and Karen Ceradsky and her husband, Bill, of Trenton; a son, Kenneth R. Almond and his wife, Trisha, of High Ridge; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Ruth Almond of Brookfield; a sister, Crystal Perkins of Brookfield; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Turner, and an infant, Opal.
