The sheep show got under way this morning at the North Central Missouri Fair, with 197 head entered in the show, down slightly from last year?s total of 203.

The sheep show got under way this morning at the North Central Missouri Fair, with 197 head entered in the show, down slightly from last year?s total of 203.

The Ladies Lead Line kicked off events, with Lacey Jones of Hamilton taking first place in the senior division and Christina Judas of New Boston taking first in the junior division.

Other place-winners in the senior division were Jenny Milligan of Hamilton,second; Laura Youtsey of Trenton, third; and Shawn Sipple of Hamilton, fourth.

Other place-winners in the junior division were Katie Jones of Hamilton, second, and Laura Almond of Brookfield, third.

Maggie Almond of Brookfield was the only participant in the pee wee lead line.

There were 13 participants in the pee wee show, also held this morning, with the regular show following and champions to be selected late this afternoon.

There were 50 head of dairy cattle entered in the dairy show Thursday at the fair.

Colton Hardy of Browning exhibited the supreme champion dairy female, a Holstein, with Ashley Schmidt of Laredo exhibiting the reserve champion, also a Holstein.

Showmanship awards went to Tawnya Hardy of Browning in the junior division and Ashley Schmidt in the senior division.

Breed champions included the following:

Brown Swiss – James Penn of Maryville, senior yearling heifer, champion; Christy Hart of Laredo, heifer, two to three years, reserve.

Holstein – Colton Hardy, cow, five years and over, champion; Ashley Schmidt, five years and over, reserve.

Jersey – Ashley Schmidt, 3 years and over; James Penn, senior yearling heifer, reserve.

Thomas Mack, Mackenzie Mack and Sarah Shuler, all of Trenton, earned gold ribbons in the bucket calf category.

Other ribbon winners in the show were:

Christy Hart, 5 gold; James Penn, 6 gold, 2 silver; Ashley Schmidt, 4 gold; Megan Schmidt of Laredo, 4 gold; Emily Schmidt, 2 gold, 2 silver; Jenny Hart of Laredo, 2 gold, 1 silver; Jason Marx of Easton, 4 gold; Gary Kountz of Easton, 2 gold, 2 silver; Colton Hardy, 1 gold, 1 silver; Tawnya Hardy, 5 gold; Chad Tudeen of Newtown, 1 silver; and Jeremy Shuler of Trenton, 1 gold.

All participants in the show received a cash prize from the Dairy Farmers of America.

Rock Barn exhibitors received ribbons Wednesday morning for projects on display at the fair.

The senior division has 46 exhibitors with approximately 240 projects. These numbers are very close to last year?s participation figures. Exhibitors were from Humphreys, Gilman City, Jamesport, Milan, Harris, Browning, Galt, Laredo, Brimson and Jameson as well as Trenton. One item was submitted from Japan.

Leona Keuhn has been named the recipient of the Bessie Chambers Award for most food related entries in Senior Division. In the special woodworking category, judges selected the miniature stone house submitted by Dean Harp as its top winner. Receiving a donated award is Twyla Keuhn for most baked items and she will receive a Watkins baking assortment donated by Tonya Patridge.

Adult exhibitors receiving Ball-Kerr Food Preservation Honors were: fruits, Leona Keuhn, first, and Vickie Meservey, second; vegetables, Leona Keuhn, first, and Ruth Hamilton, second; pickles, Mary Lou Cassity, first, and Vickie Meservey, second; and soft spreads, Tonia Parsons, first, and Dottie Cox, second. In the Best of Category (Adults), winners were Mary Lou Cassity, best pickles, and Tonia Parsons, best soft spreads.

Approximately 60 youth from Grundy and surrounding counties also displayed their skills and areas of interest in the Rock Barn with approximately 350 exhibits..

Ellen Stevenson was awarded the Ball-Kerr Food Preservation Awards (Youth) in the vegetable and soft spreads categories. In the special woodworking category for junior division, judges determined a tie on a gray wooden bench submitted by Jeffrey Parsons, a footstool from Pake Croy and a squirrel carving done by Nicholas Jermanovich.

In the poultry show, Trevor Bell of Bogard received a grand champion ribbon on a duck entry and 5 blue ribbons. Jessica Gunderson, Megan Gunderson, and Scott Gunderson, all of Kidder, each received a blue ribbon on their duck entries. The grand champion chicken belonged to Sarah Shuler while Scott Gunderson had the reserve champion. Jeremy Shuler also received a champion award. Ribbon winners in the chicken competition were Trevor Bell, 9 blue, 6 red; Megan Gunderson, 5 blue; Scott Gunderson, 6 blue; Jessica Gunderson; 4 blue; Jeremy Shuler, 2 blue; Sarah Shuler, 1 blue and a Grand Champion ribbon.

In the rabbit show, Trevor Bell received Grand Champion award as well as 8 blue, 1 red and 1 white ribbon. Kelly Horton of Chillicothe had the reserve champion and received 1 blue ribbon. Other ribbon winners were Megan Myers of Chillicothe, 1 blue; and Allen Jeffries of Wheeling, 1 red.

A total of 48 individuals from Sunnyview Nursing Home, Eastview Manor and Grundy County Learning Center exhibited about 330 items in the Rock Barn.

There were 145 entries from 25 exhibitors in the NCM Fair flower show.
