Mary ?Evelyn? Smith Pittaway,, an 88-year-old resident of Mesa, AZ, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003 in Mesa. She was a former Chillicothe resident and was the sister of W. Elsworth Smith and Edith Collins of Trenton.

Mary ?Evelyn? Smith Pittaway,, an 88-year-old resident of Mesa, AZ, died on Sunday, July 20, 2003 in Mesa. She was a former Chillicothe resident and was the sister of W. Elsworth Smith and Edith Collins of Trenton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at the Lindley Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Burial will be in the Schrock Cemetery in rural Reger.
An open visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2003 at the funeral home and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. A family visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, prior to the service.
Mrs. Pittaway was born on Jan. 25, 1915 in Reger, the daughter of Walter A. and Ada Elizabeth Rogers Smith. She was married at the Reger Methodist Church on Aug. 16, 1931 to George Pittaway. They lived in Oklahoma and several other Midwestern states and settled in Chillicothe in 1951, where her husband was superintendent for the Murry Windel Construction Company.
The Pittaways purchased Anderson?s Dress Shop at Chillicothe in 1968, then Mrs. Pittaway later moved the store, the Jean Mare Shop, to the Park Shopping Center and continued business there until 1988, retiring after 20 years to care for her ailing husband. She moved to Mesa in June 1998 to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Deane Janette and Glenn Wilson.
She was a member of the Hope Haven board of directors for 25 years and was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Fact and Fiction Club, the original Chillicothe Saddle Club, the ?TLC? Pinochle group, the United Methodist Women?s organization, the Mary Martha Church Circle and the Grand River Historical Society and Museum. In her spare time, she loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens and canning the yield.
Mrs. Pittaway is survived by two daughters, Deane Janette and Glenn Wilson of Mesa and Rheta JoAnne Smith of Flagstaff, AZ; two granddaughters, Shelley Ellegood and her husband, Tim, of Bedford, KY and Charlotte Edwards and her husband, Peter of Westerville, OH; seven great-grandchildren, Steven, Stephanie, Sara and Stacey Corry of Bedford and Colin, Tanner and Brennan Edwards of Westerville; a brother, W. Elsworth Smith of Trenton; a sister, Edith Collins of Trenton; a sister-in-law, Grace Smith of Independence; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, George, who died in September 1989, Mrs. Pittaway was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1935; her parents; a brother, Irvin Smith; a granddaughter, Sharman Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Smith.
The family suggests memorial to the Evelyn Pittaway Chula Vista Care Center Memorial Fund. These may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the Chula Vista Care Center, 60 South 58th St., Mesa, AZ 86006. Memorials may also be made to the donor’s choice.
