Water rates and property nuisances were among items discussed by area city officials during meetings this week.

Spickard

The Spickard Board of Aldermen met Tuesday night, taking action on just one item.

City Clerk DeAnn Olson said the board agreed to send a letter to a resident, asking him to mow his property. A neighbor of the individual had complained to city officials about weeds on the property that exceeded the city?s nuisance ordinance.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 5.

Princeton

Meeting on Monday night, the Princeton City Council voted to increase its water rates.

City Clerk Keri Stamper said the council agreed to increase water rates by 35 percent after hearing information from Art May of the consulting firm, Midwest Assistance Program. May told the council that he had reviewed the city?s budget, which revealed that the city had been losing money in its water department for some time. He said the increase should generate enough money to allow the water department to pay for itself. Mrs. Stamper noted the city has not had a water charge increase since 1997.

An ordinance approving the increase will come before the council at its August meeting and would go into effect on Sept. 1.

The council approved a service contract with the Princeton Ministerial Alliance to provide $300 for a gospel concert at the Mercer County Fair and also approved a service contract with the Princeton Chamber of Commerce for $5,100, which would pay for entertainment for ?Saturday Night Live,? July 4 and Calamity Jane Day.

Building permits were approved for Marlene Coon and Phillip Middleton, each of whom plans to build a deck; and Rev. Gary Watkins, who is building a house.

The council approved a request to block off a portion of the downtown square area from 5 p.m. on Aug. 1 to 6 a.m. on Aug. 2 for the Relay for Life and to block off the street between Main and Hickland for a dance and beer garden for Calamity Jane Day. A liquor license was also approved for the Calamity Jane beer garden.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Aug. 5.
