Using state budget figures of what Superintendent Harry Wheeler described as “his best guess for now,” the Trenton R-9 Board of Education approved its 2003-2004 budget that calls for revenues being projected at just over $38,000 higher than expenditures.

During a special meeting at noon, Monday, the board approved a budget that calls for revenues of $7,900,073.03 while expenditures were listed at $7,861,202.05. Wheeler said that he used a pro-ratio factor of .83 to calculate the amount of state aid the district can expect to receive, although he added that Gov. Bob Holden has already indicated plans to withhold funding from the new education budget bills approved last week.

The board earlier this year voted to cut some personnel and program costs, including a freeze on staff salaries, in preparation for expected funding reductions from the state. Those cuts are figured into the budget.

The district is ending the current fiscal year with a balance of $842,000 and is projecting fund balance next year to be at $880,870.98. This would be if there are no changes in the amount of money the district expects to receive from the state, which Wheeler said could be a possibility down the road.

The board voted to seek bids to repair a portion of the high school roof that was damaged when the new middle school was constructed. Director of Supportive Services George Moore said the district has received a settlement from the company that did the roof work and will use that money to make the repairs. Bids will be received until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, with the board to meet at 5:30 that evening to approve the bid so that work can begin and be finished before the start of school in August.

Parthelia Bonnett of Trenton was hired as a cook at the high school, where she had been serving as a substitute last spring. Don Scott of Trenton was hired to work in maintenance while Sherry Taylor of Trenton was hired as a night custodian.

The board also approved year-end transfers and bills to close out the 2002-2003 year, which ends today.

The meeting today marked the last meeting for Wheeler, who is retiring as R-9 Superintendent. Board President Dr. John Holcomb expressed his appreciation for Wheeler’s work, not only as R-9 superintendent but in the education field as well. Craig Noah officially begins his duties as R-9 superintendent on Tuesday.
