Robert Dean Vanderpool, an 63-year-old resident of Mammoth Spring, AR, died on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Jonesboro, AR.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the Carter Funeral Chapel in Thayer. The Rev. James Johnson officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery at Mammoth Spring. Military rites were conducted by VFW Post #7831 of Mammoth Spring and Masonic rites were conducted by Lodge #432 of Hardy, AR.

The organist was Mildred Massey. Lavern Johnson was the pianist and the singers were the Johnson Quartet.

Pallbearers were Edward Vanderpool, Walt Stoner, Dave McRea, William Tilly, Billy Vanderpool and Mike Tilley.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Roberson, Gary Dunn, Leon Wilson, Clint Collins, Phil Fischer and John Van Wyhe.

Mr. Vanderpool was born on Feb. 21, 1940 in Trenton, the of Lloyd O. and Grace Matlo Vanderpool. He was married on July 3, 1967 at Princeton to Sue Elrod.

He was deputy sheriff for Polk County in Des Moines, IA and a former chief of police in Mammoth Spring, serving a total of 30 years in law enforcement. He was also a conductor for the Rock Island Railroad for many years.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Riverview General Baptist Church at Mammoth Spring, serving as a deacon.

Mr. Vanderpool was a member of the Spring River Shrine Club of Hardy, the Sahara Shrine Temple in Pine Bluff, AR and the Wilson Nasonic Lodge #432 in Hardy. He was a past master of the Capital Masonic Lodge #110 in Des Moines and patrom of the Eastern Star Chapter #149 in Mammoth Spring. He was a member of Des Moines Consistory, AASR, a lifetime member and commander for many years of the VFW Post #7831 Mammoth Spring.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, of the home; two daughters, Brenda Amsden and husband, Billy, of Moscow, TN and Patricia Vanderford and husband, Bill, of Olive Branch MS; two sons, Donald Vanderpool of Memphis, TN, and Timothy Dean Vanderpool and his wife, Susan, of Mammoth Spring; three brothers, James Vanderpool of Des Moines, George Vanderpool of Trenton and Bill Vanderpool of West Des Moines, IA; one sister, Mary Tharpe of Herrington, KS; seven grandchildren, Chris Amsden of Moscow, TN, Tiffany Young of Bartlett, TN, Tish Johnson of Mammoth Spring, Desiree Trammel of Olive Branch, Donald Glenn Vanderpool Jr. of Memphis and Gracie Vanderpool of Mammoth Spring; and five great-grandchildren, Austin, Madelyn, Colby, Don and Amanda.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two great-grandchildren, Shelby Young and Baily Young.
