Trenton High School graduate Kyle Bortell set a new school record on his way to winning the state title in the 110-meter high hurdles at this weekend?s 2003 Class 2 Missouri State High School Track Championships in Jefferson City.

Bortell became Trenton?s top 110-meter hurdler in Friday?s preliminaries, where he ran a 15.31, which turned out to be the fastest time heading into Saturday?s finals. The THS graduate clocked a 15.34 in the finals, to edge Brett Cheney of South Callaway, who finished second with a 15.35.

“It’s a pretty awesome feat to be the very best in your state; not many kids get to do that,” THS Coach Rich Johnson said. “He’s worked real hard all year and then to go down there and break the school record is quite an accomplishment.”

The THS boys track team also got a medal in the triple jump as sophomore Wade Peters leaped 41.05.5 to take sixth-place honors. The event was won by Karrington Rogers of Malden, who jumped 47-06.5.

Johnson noted that both Bortell and Peters worked hard all year at getting to the state championships, taking advantage of some special help during the season.

“Both of those kids worked really hard all year,” Johnson said. “Kyle Beverlin came in and worked with Kyle (Bortell) and Tad Trombley helped Wade. Anytime you can get special help from people who know what they are doing is a big advantage.”
