The Grundy R-5 Board of Education met Monday evening, discussing resignations, agreeing to seek bids for the sale of two buildings and reinstating the track program.
According to Superintendent Paul Huey, the board accepted the resignation of Cindy Delp, teacher aide, and discussed the resignation of Tammy Spickard, math instructor and coach. As Miss Spickard has already signed her contract for the 2003-2004 school year, the board agreed to release her from the contract if a suitable replacement can be found.
Board members met with Ray Blakely of Blakely and Associates to discuss the electrical system in the district and voted to have rewiring done so that only one meter will be necessary. Blakely also suggested that the electric range be moved from the high school to the elementary school, but no action was taken on that recommendation.
Board members met with coaches Les Jackson and Miss Spickard to discuss its previous decision to eliminate the track program due to budget cuts. Jackson and Miss Spickard said the booster club has offered to donate $1,500 of the $3,000 that would have been saved through the cut and, with the elimination of a portion of the salary for fifth and sixth grade basketball, elimination of a softball trip to Jefferson School at Conception Junction and a few other items, the board feels the difference can be made up without cutting the program.
It was agreed to accept sealed bids for the sale of the old Methodist Church, which had been donated to the school, as well as for the sale and removal of the old preschool house. The vote on the preschool house was 5-1, with no information available on who voted against the sale. The board had previously voted to eliminate the preschool program due to budget concerns and Huey said that even if the program is reinstated at some time, it would be in the district?s best interest to seek another location for the program.
In other business, attendance reports were given by building principals, with the April attendance at the elementary school at 96.095 percent and the average daily attendance at the high school at 94.6 percent. The board voted to send 15 teachers and administrators to the ?Putting It Together? Conference in Columbia in June, which will focus on increasing MAP scores in communication arts and math. The board voted to participate in the Pleasant View R-6 Early Childhood Special Education Program and in the school health program through the Grundy County Health Depart-ment. It was agreed to seek bids for health insurance since the board is looking at a 25 percent increase in health coverage costs. It was agreed to remain with KidGuard Insurance for student insurance for the 2003-2004 school year. A school finance report was also given.
In executive session, the board voted to support the administration?s decision concerning the suspension of two students from school grounds and activities and offered a contract to Shelly Cunningham to serve as a teacher aide for the 2003-2004 school year.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for June 16.
