The Trenton Acting guild will hold auditions and an organizational meeting for “The Sound of Music” on Tuesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in the Hoover Community Theater at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library. Scripts are available for perusal at the library.

The classic musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein recounts the story of Maria, an aspiring nun, who leaves the convent to act as nursemaid to the children of Captain von Trapp in 1930’s Austria. Among the well-known songs in this award-winning musical area “Do Re Me”, “My Favorite Things” and “Climb Every Mountain.” The stage show also features two songs in the movie, which are sung by the Countess, who would like to marry the captain, and by Max, a free-loading friend of the captain’s.

The cast calls for four principal women – Maria, the Countess, the Mother Abbess and Liesl, the oldest of the von Trapp children – and three principal men – the captain, his friend, Max, and Rolf, a young man who is smitten with Liesl. There are also roles for six more children, four girls and two boys. Other featured roles include nuns in the abbey, friends and servants of the von Trapps and Nazis.

Persons wishing to audition for principal or children’s roles should bring a prepared song. An accompanist will be available or performances may use a tape or CD. Auditioners will also be asked to read from the script. In addition, those who wish to perform in featured roles should attend the organizational meeting.

Artistic staff from the show include Cathie Lowrey, who will be the accompanist, and Colleen Babcock, who is the musical director. Pam Infranca will be the choreographer, Leah Brinser will be the set artist and Leta Wheeler will be the sound technician. Directors are Susan Provance and Dr. Vicki Wheeler.

The musical will be presented June 27, 28 and 29 in the Hoover Community theater. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons, beginning May 27.
