“Dog Gone Fun” is the theme for the 2003 Summer Reading Program at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library.
Youth ages toddler to sixth grade can participate in the program, which includes several fun activities throughout the summer to encourage reading.
Sign-up day is Monday, June 16. Participants should come to the library on that day to fill out a registration form and receive two “Laugh Meter Report Forms” that will be used to verify books that are read. More forms will be available throughout the program period. Each child that reads and fills out 18 forms will receive a book and all participants will receive some item for reading.
Goals are being set for each of the age groups, with toddlers to first grade reading about a dog at their reading level. The second through sixth grade goal will be for participants to read at least one “Hank the Cowdog” book. Library officials hope the goals will get families involved in reading with their children.
The library staff will also participate in the program. A container for dog treats will be at the library and each time a child finishes a book, treats will be placed in the container, which will then be given to the Grundy County Animal Shelter for its animals. The Animal Shelter is a partner in the summer reading program, giving some of the presentations.
The first program will be on Wednesday, June 18 and will feature musician/storyteller Anthony Clark, who will appear in the Hoover Community Theater at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. These programs will be open to all ages.
Toddlers to four-year-olds will meet on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., while kindergarten and first graders will meet on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Second and third graders will meet on Thursday at 10 a.m. and the fourth through sixth grade programs will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Programs will continue through July 24, with awards day set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30.There will be no programs on July 2 and 3.
