The Grundy R-5 Board of Education took care of several personnel items during a meeting Monday night in Galt.
The board accepted the resignation of Phil Fox as high school principal and, during an executive session, talked to one individual about the position. Superintendent Paul Huey said Fox will be going back to the classroom as vocational-agriculture instructor, a position he held prior to being principal. The board has planned a special meeting on March 28 to interview possible candidates for the principal’s job.
The board also accepted the resignation of special education instructor Kathy Lindquist, who is retiring at the end of the school year. She has been in education for 42 years and has been at Grundy R-5 since 1985.
The board agreed to hire all non-tenured teachers for the 2003-2004 school year, with salaries to be based on a salary schedule adopted by the board at the meeting. Huey said the schedule allows for career ladder money to be available for next school year as well as giving instructors a small increase.
Huey said the board discussed potential cuts, deciding to keep the preschool program one more year but raising the tuition rate to $75 per week. There will also be a limit of 36 weeks placed on the time a child can participate.
The board also discussed the ITV program, but will not make any decisions until the next round of cuts are made by the state.
The board approved a summer school program for this year, subject to money being available. The program would be available for students in kindergarten through 12.
Approval was given to a bid from David Crouch to repair the roof on the vo-ag building at a cost of $2,664. It was the lowest of three bids received.
The board agreed to allow the school gym to be used for a variety show to benefit the Relay for Life program. Amy Axtell reported on the A-Plus Program, which the board agreed to participate in again next year. A total of 14 seniors have met the requirements as A-Plus students this year.
Board members were invited to attend a banquet on April 14 in Maryville which honors students who have received the Distinction in Performance Award.
The next meeting of the board will be a special meeting on Friday, March 28. The next regular meeting will be April 14, which is one week earlier than the regular meeting time.
