Described as a ?mover and shaker? of the community, Trenton resident Marian McCarty was honored by the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday night as its 17th ?Hall of Fame? Award recipient.
Mrs. McCarty was recognized for her contributions to the community, which include activities that have been a benefit to all residents of the community. A 27-year veteran of the Missouri School System, she spent 21 years as a drama and math teacher in the Trenton R-9 School District. In addition, she has been involved in a host of activities in which she has received recognition on the local, state and national levels, including involvement with the American Cancer Society. A cancer survivor herself, Mrs. McCarty has unselfishly given many, many hours helping not only those stricken with the disease, but working with ACS officials in their quest to improve research and treatment methods. Other activities include the Grand River Garden Club, the Trenton branch of the American Association of University Women, the Grundy County Historical Society, the Grundy County Retired Teachers Association, the Wesley United Methodist Church, the Heritage Club, the Riverside Country Club Bridge Ladies, the Shakespearean Circle, the THS Alumni Association, the Foundation Trust for THS, the World War II POW group and is co-creator of the THS-TJC Alumni News.
?There are a lot more persons who are more deserving than I, but I had the longest list,? Mrs. McCarty said in accepting her award.
The Trenton native said that when she retired from teaching, she knew she needed to do more, thus her involvement in community affairs.
?It?s fun to do for other people,? she said, adding that she has always tried to help others as part of her work in the community.
?It?s been a fun time, but there is still lots to do and I can?t do it all,? Mrs. McCarty concluded. ?You all can get it done. Trenton is a great place and I would encourage each and everyone of you to get interested in the community and do something to keep it that way. I am humbled and honored.?
Mrs. McCarty recognized her son, Edward, who attended the program from Wilmington, NC, as well as her niece Julia Ashbrook of Chillicothe, along with her husband, Tom, and daughter, Claire.
In addition to the award ceremony, a review of chamber activities was given by Chamber President Vickie Shoots.
