George H. Childers, an 86-year-old resident of Newtown, died on Friday, March 14, 2003 at the Eastview Manor Care Center in Trenton.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at the Newman Funeral Home in Unionville. Danny Busick will officiate. Burial will be in the Unionville Cemetery at Unionville.
Pallbearers will be Junior Chambers, Chris Houston, Dan Dooley, Ivan Otto, Larry Childers and Gary Staggs.
Visitation is under way with a family visitation from 7 to 9 o’clock tonight (Monday, March 17, 2003) at the funeral home.
Mr. Childers was born March 21, 1916 in Putnam County, the son of Henry and Mattie Whitson Childers. He was educated in Unionville area schools. He was married on Dec. 13, 1941 to Norma M. Rayner, who preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 1964.
Mr. Childers wworked in the coal mines and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps for a few years during the Roosevelt Administration. He also drove trucks for Elbert and Larry Staggs and Unionville Redi Mix. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and in later years pursued an interest in antiques and caning chairs.
Mr. Childers is survived by four children, Georgia Mann of Unionville, IA, Allen Childers and his wife, Ruth, of Tama, IA, Gary Childers and his wife, Sharon, of Durango, IA, and Margaret Milner of Newtown; one brother, Jake Childers of Blue Grass, IA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Bendsil and Molly Marie Chambers; and four brothers, Noel, James Arthur, Glen and Clarence Dean Childers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the George Childers’ Memorial Fund and may be left at the funeral home.
