The Board of Public Works has decided to seek bids for the possible purchase of new electric generating equipment after reviewing an electric rate study during a meeting on Thursday night.

Trenton Municipal Utilities Director Chad Davis said the board discussed the study done by Blakely and Associates, which recommended the city look at adding to its electric generating capacity to meet current and future needs. Davis said that as part of a statewide pool, TMU is sometimes asked to generate electricity for other communities. While receiving payment for those services, they also receive a monthly capital credit for having the capacity to generate, if needed. It is the monthly capital credit that Davis said would be used to help pay for the new equipment, if the board decides to pursue that avenue. He said that estimates show the cost of four new generating units would be $1 million, which he said is much, much less than the cost of the same units over the past several years and even as recently as a year ago.

Davis said bids for the equipment would be sought, but that TMU would also be contacting companies who provide these items as well. It is hoped the bids can be reviewed when the board meets on March 20.
